There are a couple of fun posts over at Josh Hanagarne’s site, The World’s Strongest Librarian, involving building up your gang/posse. In the first post, Josh names the 5 tough guys he’d call on if he ever got in a suburban scuffle. Today, Liz Muirhead followed up with a guest post describing her 5 tough women she’d have in her gang.
I love the idea of having a posse, a group of toughs who’ll go to bat for me when I get in a bind.
When you are trying to find or follow your calling, a bind can take many forms. A bind could be:
- That obnoxious inner voice saying, “Are you nuts? You can’t/shouldn’t/won’t do that!”
- Your mom/dad/spouse/friend/other well-meaning purported supporter saying, “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
- The box (that you can’t imagine your way out of)
- Financial or physical obstacles (see also, “the box”)
- Lack of time
When that bind threatens to choke your dream or to extinguish your enthusiasm, yell for your posse! Imagine them charging in, seizing that bind and stomping it good! And once the bind is gone forever, imagine your posse cheering you on (or kicking you in the pants if that’s what it takes), telling you, “Okay, pal, the rest is up to you!”
Who would be in YOUR posse?
Who’s got your back when you’re in a bind? Would it be: Wonder Woman, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conner, Uma Thurma as Beatrix Kiddo, the Bionic Woman and Elphaba from Wicked? Or does your posse look more like John McLane from DieHard with Arnold the Terminator, Wolverine, the Incredible Hulk, and Optimus Prime? Your posse members don’t have to be real, modern or even acquainted with you, so long as you know they can do the job. Name the tough guys/gals in your posse, and, next time trouble rears its ugly head, call them up.
And share! Use that comment button! Who’s got the best posse in town? Well, after mine: Xena, Wonder Woman, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conner, Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley and Athena.
